SOAR

Soar with the IVCC Library!

Jacobs Library is excited to announce that we are partnering with the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) to enhance our library catalog, which will provide our users an easier search and discovery experience. Searching with S.O.A.R. will provide results across our resources of print and electronic (full-text) holdings, the Jacobs Library’s Catalog, Course Reserves and/or I-Share on one platform. At Illinois Valley Community College, we strive to help you soar and we believe this new system will live up to its name. Search, Organize, and Access Resources with Soar!

S.O.A.R.’s Search and Discovery Features:

  • Quick searching based on Title, Subject, Author, etc.
  • Advanced searching with Boolean and ‘Refine my results’ functions
  • Integration of the library’s digital and electronic collections
  • Easier I-Share navigation
  • Print and electronic holdings featured on one record
  • Virtual Browse feature for print books to see related books by subject area

New to IVCC?

If you are new to IVCC, you will need to set up your library account to login to SOAR. The library is open every Monday through Wednesday from 7:30am to 6:30pm, every Thursday from 7:30am to 4:30pm on the main campus and 11am to 4pm on the Ottawa Center Campus in room 104, and every Friday from 8am to 2pm. Call or email us for more information at (815)224-0306 or jacobs_library@ivcc.edu.

Returning Members

If you a returning student, staff, or faculty member, you should have received your login information by email in July 2020. If you did not, or you are having trouble logging in, view the Sign into Soar tutorial below or contact the library and we will you get you setup.

Why do I need a SOAR account?

You do not need a SOAR library account to access our databases or search in SOAR.

You do need a login for SOAR if you wish to checkout library items; have greater search functionality in SOAR; have the ability to request items from our library or other I-Share libraries; create favorites lists; view your current loans and/or renew your items online

SOAR Search Scopes

What does each search profile search? SOAR Search Scopes include the following:

Combined Search - The combined search searches every type of resource, meaning articles, books, eBooks, videos, audiobooks, etc. If something is available at another I-Share library, you will see other institutions who have the item in the 'Get It' section of your physical item's result. This search scope does not search over EBSCO databases, read more below.

Library Catalog - The library catalog search searches over items that Jacobs Library owns and filters out items that we subscribe to. Owned items include but are not limited to all of our physical items, some eBooks, and perpetually purchased materials.

Articles - The articles search is self explanatory, and searches over only articles including journal articles, news articles, etc., except for EBSCO articles, as you will see below.

All I-Share Libraries - The I-Share search will bring up other institution's holdings that we can request to have sent to our library for your convenience if our library does not have what you were looking for. You can send I-Share requests for pickup at the Oglesby and Ottawa Campus.

EBSCO API Databases - The EBSCO API search is separated out because EBSCO competes with the company that powers SOAR, which is ProQuest. These databases, unfortunately, only have results show up in this separate search.

Course Reserves - If an instructor has put items on reserve in our system, Leganto, these items will show up in the Course Reserves search.
