In general the best way to use a reference book or multi-volume set is to begin with the last volume because it contains the index. Then you find the appropriate volume and pages based on the entry in the index. Many reference books are organized alphabetically by the artist, artwork, or subject.
Reference books do stay in the library and you can photocopy the pages.
