Articles, Journals, and Databases

How are articles, journals, and databases organized?

  • Articles are published in print or online journals, magazines, newspapers, etc.
  • Issues of journals, magazines, and newspapers are collected and stored in databases.
  • Each database includes a brief description of the content you'll find.

Tips for searching databases:

  • Break your topic down and determine which words in your topic sentence are the most important. These are called keywords or search terms.
  • Brainstorm synonyms for your keywords and think about what you want to know about your topic. Are you interested in a particular time, location, or person for example. Building a list of search terms allows you to try different combinations in your searches.
  • Try more than one database. Because databases contain different articles, you'll discover additional results each time you search.
