Library Instruction

Application & Practice

Each library instruction session includes one or more active learning activities to help students practice new skills and apply what they've learned to their assignments. Below is a list of sample activities for groups and individuals.

Open Research Time

  • Students are given time at the end of class to apply what they've learned and work on their own assignments.

  • A librarian is available to answer questions as they arise.

Article Search

  • Students are given a set amount of time to locate an article using the databases covered during the session.

  • Students are asked to turn in a link or citation to their article via an online form or Blackboard.

  • A librarian is available to answer questions and help with common searching issues.

Evaluating Online Sources

  • Students are asked to select an online source and evaluate it using the WWWs worksheet

  • Students are asked to turn in their worksheet via an online form or Blackboard

  • A librarian is available to answer questions and coach students through the source evaluation process.

Open Research Time

  • Students are given time at the end of class to work on their assignments in groups.

Dry Erase Board Brainstorm

  • Students work in groups to brainstorm search terms related to a topic.

  • Groups are asked to share their work with the class and explain why they chose specific terms.

Online Source Evaluation & Report Out

  • Groups are given a set amount of time to evaluate an online source.

  • Groups are asked to share their work with the class and decide whether a source is credible or not.

Article Search & Report Out

  • Groups are given a set amount of time to apply the skills they learned in class and locate an article related to their topic.

  • Groups are asked to share their work with the class and explain their search process.

Database Search Challenge

  • The class is divided into two groups and given a set amount of time to find as many database articles as possible.

  • Articles must be related to the given topic and submitted via an online form.

  • Submissions must include a citation or permanent link.

  • A real time results screen is displayed to increase competition and reveal which team is in the lead.
